SARP is supporting the restoration of 260 village tanks across six districts of the dry zone to strengthen water security and help farming communities cope with changing rainfall patterns, drought and excessive rainfall. Of these, 66 tank restoration activities have already been completed.
The initiative covers Kurunegala, Puttalam, Matale, Anuradhapura, Vavuniya and Mannar, with the project expected to benefit around 40,000 farming families. Rather than treating each tank as an isolated infrastructure facility, SARP is taking a cascade-based approach, recognising the interconnected nature of village tank and water management systems.
Alongside tank restoration, SARP is supporting the conservation of 834 hectares of catchment areas and the development of 266 km of farmer and access roads, strengthening the wider infrastructure needed for productive and resilient agricultural communities.
Through these integrated interventions, SARP aims to improve water availability, strengthen climate resilience, support agricultural production and protect rural livelihoods. The restoration of village tanks therefore goes beyond infrastructure development, contributing to more secure and sustainable farming systems for communities in the dry zone.
