Sri Lanka has a high demand for eggs across all districts, with consistently good market prices. However, the current supply remains limited and insufficient to meet this demand. In response, the Smallholder Agribusiness and Resilience Project (SARP) is working to increase egg production as a means of generating additional income for beneficiaries and reducing poverty.
One of the key initiatives under this effort is the Backyard Poultry Program, implemented in selected project districts. The program primarily targets unemployed women and youth, aiming to empower them economically while enhancing food security. To date, SARP has conducted several training programs on backyard poultry production, equipping participants with essential knowledge and skills.
The project has now entered the implementation phase of the Backyard Poultry Program, with successful rollouts already underway in districts such as Kurunegala and Vavuniya. Beneficiaries in these areas have received comprehensive support, including training, poultry cages, feeding equipment, and chicks. This initiative is expected to play a vital role in reducing poverty and improving household food security in the targeted regions
