What began during the COVID-19 pandemic as a quick response to food insecurity has now become a sustainable lifestyle choice—cultivating fruits and vegetables in home gardens. Beyond reducing household expenses, home gardening offers numerous benefits for families and the environment.
By using organic fertilizers and natural pest control methods, homegrown produce is safer, healthier, and more environmentally friendly compared to chemically treated market produce. It not only improves family well-being but also contributes to a greener planet.
Home gardening also nurtures family bonds, as household members come together to plant, care for, and harvest crops. It creates a space of cooperation, love, and togetherness, while also promoting peace of mind and providing gentle physical activity.
The SARP Project actively supports and encourages nutrition-focused home gardening, going beyond traditional practices by promoting the cultivation of nutritious and beneficial crops that strengthen household food security and health.
During a recent workshop in the Vavuniya District, we had the privilege of visiting a thriving home garden lovingly maintained by a dedicated female participant—an inspiring example of how knowledge can be turned into action. 🌱💪
